Polarkonsult Advances Defence-Focused Vessel Design and New Maritime Concepts

Published: November 14th 2025

Strengthening Capabilities for the Norwegian Defence Sector
Polarkonsult is strengthening its position as a key provider of maritime design and engineering services, now with an increased focus on defence-related vessel concepts. The company is currently developing several new projects aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of the Norwegian defence sector while supporting industrial growth and value creation in northern Norway.

“We have delivered engineering services to the defence sector for many years, and it is important for us to stay ahead of evolving needs. New assignments demand higher levels of technology, flexibility, and efficiency. That is why we are now developing new concepts that meet these expectations,” says Fredrik Holtet Lien of Polarkonsult.

From Proven Civilian Designs to Modern Military Platforms
Polarkonsult is taking a clear step into the defence sector with new vessel concepts based on proven civilian design principles—further developed into dedicated military platforms. The company’s expertise in dual-use design enables robust solutions with high technical performance and operational flexibility, tailored to the Armed Forces’ requirements for modern maritime operations.

The company has long-standing experience in complex vessel design for both civilian and government sectors. The design of KV Tromsø, still in active use today, stands as an example of Polarkonsult’s capability to deliver functional, reliable solutions suited for demanding environments.

Next-Generation Concepts for Future Defence Needs
The new defence concepts build on this foundation while representing a significant step forward. The work includes new hull designs, integrated system solutions, and functional concepts tailored to contemporary defence operations—with an emphasis on efficient operations, reduced emissions, and seamless interaction between vessel and crew.

“This is not just about designing ships; it’s about understanding the full picture—from operational use and technical integration to logistics and maintenance. Our strength lies in the combination of broad engineering competence and hands-on experience from projects along the entire Norwegian coastline,” Lien says.

Through its expanded focus on defence vessel concepts, Polarkonsult aims to ensure that Norwegian industry is well positioned for future procurements and modernization efforts—delivering solutions that enhance readiness, efficiency, and national value creation.
