Polarkonsult has been awarded the task of updating system documentation for the Snøhvit Future project. The assignment is set to last at least two years and includes several potential options.
Assigned by Aibel, Equinor’s main supplier for modifications at the Melkøya facility, Polarkonsult is tasked with delivering system and operational documentation for all modifications connected to the Snøhvit Future project, covering both new and existing elements. Additionally, they will produce training videos and update older ones, a service they previously provided for the Johan Castberg project.
The Snøhvit Future project marks a significant development for the gas and condensate field near Hammerfest and reinforces Norway’s role as a leading provider of environmentally friendly gas. In this project, which will generate nearly 5400 person-years of work in total, Polarkonsult, as a subcontractor to Aibel, has won a tender to update system documentation. The project is planned to last at least two years, with several potential options included.
“We have brought the experiences from the Johan Castberg project into our work. We faced strong competition on the Snøhvit Future project, and before Christmas, we were awarded the largest project in the company’s history,” says CEO Thomas Myhre.

Since 2019, Polarkonsult has experienced significant growth, from 25 to 42 employees in 2024, with a goal to exceed 50 employees in 2025. Recently, Polarkonsult has focused on hiring professionals with long-term industry experience, while also investing in young engineers within the company. The collaboration with Equinor and Aibel and involvement in the project has laid a solid foundation for this growth.
“Long-term agreements within the energy sector are important, and they allow us the opportunity to expand the company with more employees,” adds Myhre.

Industrial Development in Northern Norway
Polarkonsult will deliver system and operational documentation for all changes in the Snøhvit Future project, both new and existing. They will also create training videos and update old ones. Recently, Polarkonsult has focused on hiring professionals with extensive industry experience, while investing in young engineers within the company.
“We have a strong and diverse team from many fields of expertise. This diversity allows us to deliver the high-quality documentation our clients require. Additionally, we are recruiting to the region beyond the Harstad area. We utilize local resources at our offices in Narvik, Harstad, Tromsø, and Svolvær,” says Mattis Lihaug, head of energy and renewable projects at Polarkonsult.
The Snøhvit Future project secures jobs, ripple effects, and continued gas exports to Europe until 2050, strengthening Norway’s position as a long-term supplier of gas produced with very low climate emissions. Regional employment in the construction phase is estimated at 1,700 person-years.
“This is a very important project for Polarkonsult, Equinor, the state, and Norway’s revenues for decades to come. The documentation we create plays a critical role in ensuring that operations are not only efficient but also maintain the highest standards of safety and reliability,” concludes Lihaug.

“We are pleased to have Polarkonsult as a partner. Primarily, they contribute to efficient and illustrative SO documentation that ensures safe and secure training of personnel at the facilities. Furthermore, the collaboration with Polarkonsult is yet another example of the ripple effects this project brings to the entire region,” says Håkon Olset, process leader in Hammerfest from Aibel.
