The thesis is the result of a close collaboration between Multigen, Polarkonsult, and UiT Narvik, and stands as a strong example of how knowledge advances when students, academia, technology suppliers, and industry partners join forces.<\/p><p data-start=\"571\" data-end=\"1028\">Originally from a small village near Steinkjer, with a background in the Air Force and officer training, Randi has built a solid foundation in engineering. In recent years, she has contributed to several industrial projects as a process and project engineer at Polarkonsult. With her newly completed master\u2019s degree, she now adds academic depth to her practical experience\u2014delivering results that hold immediate relevance for both Multigen and Polarkonsult.<\/p><h3 data-start=\"837\" data-end=\"918\">\u00a0<\/h3><h2 data-start=\"837\" data-end=\"918\"><strong>From Wave Dynamics to Simulation Models \u2013 An In-Depth Look at Sloshing via CFD<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"\" data-start=\"920\" data-end=\"1245\">In partnership with UiT Narvik, Randi authored the thesis <em data-start=\"978\" data-end=\"1063\">\u201cSloshing and Motion Analysis of a Modular Aquaculture Tank in Rough Inshore Seas.\u201d<\/em> Using advanced CFD software (Flow 3D), she explored how internal water movement, sloshing, interacts with and affects the motion of aquaculture tanks in demanding marine environments.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1247\" data-end=\"1585\">While this first stage focused solely on wave impact, the simulation model paves the way for further exploration of wind and current effects. This particular scenario was conducted to assess the effect of the float module as a wave dampener and as a mooring point for the tank module. As expected, the results demonstrated a reduction in both the tank\u2019s motion response and the internal fluid movement.<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6ff3ded elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6ff3ded\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 data-start=\"101\" data-end=\"167\">\u00a0<\/h2><h2 data-start=\"101\" data-end=\"167\"><strong data-start=\"105\" data-end=\"167\">72% Reduction in Sloshing \u2013 and the Value of Collaboration<\/strong><\/h2><p data-start=\"169\" data-end=\"478\">One of the key findings from the thesis is a <strong data-start=\"214\" data-end=\"243\">72% reduction in sloshing<\/strong> compared to the reference scenario. While the result is based on a simplified model and several assumptions, it clearly indicates the direction future design and development can take\u2014and highlights the potential of CFD-based analysis.<\/p><p data-start=\"169\" data-end=\"478\"><em data-start=\"482\" data-end=\"930\">&#8220;We congratulate and thank Randi Kvernmo for a solid and highly relevant master\u2019s thesis. That support was critical, as simulation work of this caliber requires significant time\u2014not just to run simulations, but to carefully configure models and iterate through countless refinements.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1874\" data-end=\"2206\">\u201cBeing able to work on my thesis during regular working hours was key,\u201d Randi explains. \u201cThese simulations demand extensive prep and continuous trial and error. Having the space to do that as part of my job meant I could really ensure quality in every part of the process.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-43b54c6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"43b54c6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 data-start=\"2485\" data-end=\"2526\"><strong>Building Strategic In-House Expertise<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2528\" data-end=\"2798\">Randi\u2019s work marks more than just an academic achievement\u2014it represents a strategic investment in in-house knowledge. By mastering CFD tools like Flow 3D, she has brought advanced simulation capacity into Polarkonsult\u2014skills that previously had to be sourced externally.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2528\" data-end=\"2798\">\u201cIt\u2019s been incredibly rewarding to integrate academic research directly into practical engineering work,\u201d she reflects. \u201cIt benefits me personally, but also contributes to the company\u2019s long-term capability.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3012\" data-end=\"3090\">Her contribution is already viewed as highly valuable within the organization.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3012\" data-end=\"3090\">\u201cThis is critical knowledge for the future,\u201d says Lars Vollen, Marine and Project Engineer at Polarkonsult. \u201cWith aquaculture moving toward closed containment systems, sloshing dynamics will be a key challenge\u2014and now we\u2019re better prepared to meet it.\u201d<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3012\" data-end=\"3090\">\u201cRandi\u2019s work is a great example of how we want to grow as a company,\u201d adds Thomas Myhre, CEO of Polarkonsult.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3012\" data-end=\"3090\">\u201cWe believe in building internal competence and strengthening our technical foundation through smart collaboration with academic institutions.
